Talks about:

„Novel functional and molecular diversity in the sponge-microbe symbiosis”

Abstract:

Sponges are crucial members of the marine benthos and contain a stunning taxonomic diversity of microorganisms, whose functional properties remaining large unknown. This has limited our understanding of how microbes interact with sponges and how they contribute to essential ecological functions, such as nutrient recycling. Recent technical advances now provide opportunities to describe the functionality of sponge-associated microbes and here I will present recent findings on novel mechanisms of molecular interactions and metabolic properties of previously undescribed microbial taxa.
